Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother died, and this song kind of answers that event in his life. Above all, it's about a mother begging her son to be an honest God-fearing simple and uncomplicated person in his adult life. Tragically, he didn't get very much time to live up those words as he died in a plane crash some years later. But, perhaps now he is truly a free bird. We'll never know until it's our time.
